Mary did you know?

I find it a real pleasure to be part of life at the Royal Drawing School. This morning we visited the National Gallery to look at how Titian and Leonardo tackled the relationship between mother and child.  Here the Leonardo

and the Titian – London is so good to be able to see these for real.

This afternoon back to the Studio in Shoreditch with a real mother and real five month old baby who needed breast feeding while we sketched.  I remembered my own children, when they were that infants too and thinking what would become of them.  The lines of the song Mary did you know? started to run through my mind as I sketched.  None of us know what the future will bring  – but just sometimes we do get a sense, a premonition or a prophecy. For Mary the sleeping child was the great “I am”

Mary, did you know
that your Baby Boy would one day walk on water?
Mary, did you know
that your Baby Boy would save our sons and daughters?
Did you know
that your Baby Boy has come to make you new?
This Child that you delivered will soon deliver you.

Mary, did you know
that your Baby Boy will give sight to a blind man?
Mary, did you know
that your Baby Boy will calm the storm with His hand?
Did you know
that your Baby Boy has walked where angels trod?
When you kiss your little Baby you kissed the face of God?

Mary did you know.. Ooo Ooo Ooo

The blind will see.
The deaf will hear.
The dead will live again.
The lame will leap.
The dumb will speak
The praises of The Lamb.

Mary, did you know
that your Baby Boy is Lord of all creation?
Mary, did you know
that your Baby Boy would one day rule the nations?
Did you know
that your Baby Boy is heaven’s perfect Lamb?
The sleeping Child you’re holding is the great “I am”
